Navy Federal Wire Address vs. Mailing Address: One Routing Number, Many Addresses

Last verified against primary sources: September 25, 2026.

Navy Federal Credit Union publishes one routing number — 256074974 — and it does not change with the address you write down. The address changes with the job instead. Wires and courier packages go to 820 Follin Lane SE, Vienna, VA 22180. Ordinary letters go to PO Box 3000, Merrifield, VA 22119-3000. Those two are not interchangeable, and Navy Federal maintains a dozen more behind them, each bound to one specific task.

The short answer, and the two addresses people swap by mistake

Search results and form fields mash these together constantly, so here is the split as Navy Federal prints it:

The tell is that one is a street address and one is a post office box. A PO box only receives postal mail. Navy Federal's own mailing-address page labels 820 Follin Lane SE, Vienna, VA 22180-4907 as the Delivery/Express Mail address — the one FedEx, UPS and other couriers can actually reach. That is the same building the wire instructions name, and that double duty is the whole reason the two get confused.

Why the routing number never changes with the address

A routing number identifies an institution, not a department, a branch or a building. Under the Federal Reserve's routing-number scheme, the first four digits form the "Federal Reserve routing symbol"; for 256074974 that symbol is 2560, which appears in the Fed's published list of routing symbols in Appendix A to Regulation CC. Nothing in that structure has a field for a mailroom.

So the address printed on a wire is an identifying detail on the payment message. The field that determines which institution the funds reach is the routing number, and it is 256074974 whether the envelope in your hand says Vienna or Merrifield. Navy Federal publishes a single national routing number — it is not broken out by state, by account type, or by which of its mailrooms handles the paperwork.

This is also why the address matters less than people fear and more than they think. Less, because a mistyped ZIP will not send your paycheck to the wrong credit union — the routing number already decided that. More, because the address is what routes paper, and paper still moves a surprising amount of money at Navy Federal.

Navy Federal's addresses, by what you are actually doing

Below is the working set from Navy Federal's published mailing-address list and its account agreements. Every line is the credit union's own wording; none of it is inferred.

The pattern is not random. Merrifield handles almost everything that arrives by post. Vienna is the physical campus, so it takes anything that needs a dock or a signature. The outliers — Philadelphia for student loans, Sacramento for titles, Pensacola for powers of attorney, Columbus for Bill Pay — are outsourced or serviced operations that sit outside the Virginia footprint entirely.

Where 820 Follin Lane SE does double duty

One street address, three unrelated jobs. Navy Federal uses it for:

  1. Receiving wires. The "Navy Federal's address" line in the official wire instructions, paired with 256074974.
  2. Courier and express deliveries. The only address on the mailing page that a private carrier can serve.
  3. Mailed wire request forms. If you submit a domestic or international wire request on paper rather than by secure message, branch or phone, Navy Federal directs it to Attn: Funds Disbursement Section at the Vienna address.

That third one catches people out. The form is paper, so the instinct is "paper goes to the PO box." It does not — the Funds Disbursement Section is the only destination Navy Federal names for a mailed wire request, and it is a street address.

The ZIP code question: 22180 or 22180-4907?

Both are correct, and you will see both on Navy Federal's own site. The wire instructions print Vienna, VA 22180. The mailing-address page prints Vienna, VA 22180-4907. Same location; the five-digit form and the ZIP+4 form of one code.

Use whichever the form in front of you asks for. If a wire field has a fixed length or rejects a hyphen, use the five-digit 22180 exactly as the wire instructions print it. Do not treat the difference as a sign you have found the wrong address.

What actually happens if you use the wrong one

The consequences differ by direction, and they are easy to overstate. Being precise about them:

Checklist before you send anything

  1. Decide whether this is electronic or paper. Electronic takes the routing number, 256074974, and — for money from outside the US — SWIFT/BIC NFCUUS33XXX. Paper takes a mailing address, and the right one depends on the task.
  2. If it is a wire, copy the wire line: 820 Follin Lane SE, Vienna, VA 22180. Not the Merrifield PO box.
  3. If it is a mailed wire request, add Attn: Funds Disbursement Section.
  4. If it is a courier package, use a street address — Vienna, or the Sacramento street address for titles.
  5. If it is a payment, match the product: 3100 consumer loans, 3300 mortgage, 3500 cards, 824575 student loans.
  6. Confirm the routing number against Navy Federal's own site or the bottom of your check rather than a third-party lookup. The number is 256074974 either way — see what to give someone wiring money to your account for the full field list, and the outgoing-wire guide for fees, timing and filing methods.
